How immigration lawyers can keep clients updated during long waits
Immigration matters often involve months of waiting on a government decision. During that time clients worry that their application has been lost or forgotten, and they call. Most of those calls can be answered before they happen.
Set expectations about waiting
Tell clients early that long quiet periods are normal, that government processing times vary and change, and that you will tell them when something happens. Point them to the stage they're in rather than to a date you can't promise.
Mark every milestone
Clients find waiting easier when they can see progress. Typical milestones include gathering documents and evidence, filing the application, receiving the receipt notice, biometrics, any request for additional evidence, an interview, and the decision. A one-line update at each one - "Your application was filed on October 28; we'll tell you when the receipt notice arrives" - goes a long way.
Ask for documents clearly
When you need something from the client, say exactly what, in what form and by when. A clear list prevents back-and-forth calls and delays.
Use the client's language
Many immigration clients are more comfortable in Spanish or another language. Updates they can read in their own language reduce misunderstandings and the calls that follow them.
Keep it private
Immigration details are sensitive. Share status through a channel only the client can open, not group chats or shared email accounts.
